Early detection and diagnosis is important. The disease cannot be stopped but the progression of the disease can be slowed by treatment.

Symptoms

Many people with dementia have symptoms such as:

  • Loss of memory, judgement and reasoning

  • Mood and behavioural changes

Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s:

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life

  • Challenges in planning or solving problems

  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home or at work

  • Confusion with time or place

  • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships

  • Difficulty joining or following a conversation

  • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps

  • Experiencing changes in judgement and decision making

  • Withdrawal from work or social activities

  • Changes in mood and personality including becoming confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful and anxious
